this is new york's senior senator chuck schumer. i want to play what he said and talk to you on the other side because it piqued my interest. take a listen. >> one is to ban assault weapons, to try and reinstate the assault weapons ban. the second is to limit the size of clips to maybe no more than ten bullets per clip, and the third would be to make it harder for mentally unstable people to get guns. >> all right. it's that last point i want to ask you b.chuck schumer, senator schumer talking about what can be done or what should be done legislatively. how do we decide who is mentally unstable? how do we even know who is mentally unstable? i wouldn't imagine there's some sort of test that the government can administer? >> no, and we get into some very dangerous territory here. first of all, a lot of people are dealing with psychological stress and all sorts of issues from things we neurodevelopmental to nursis and i'm having trouble imagining we'd be able to create clarity in a law that would allow some sort of federal screening, t

there is a new headline in "new york" magazine. it reads this. why is obama caving on taxes? the article reads in part, the erosion signals not only a major substantive problem in its own right but also raises disturbing questions about obama's ability to handle his entire second-term agenda. do republicans sense a little weakness here, an opportunity? could the president's concession hurt his ability later on to negotiate with the gop? >> no. i think he is doing what needs to be done. unfortunately, this president hasn't operated or led this country like keith's former boss, president clinton, who understood the art of negotiation and actually getting there and rolling up his sleeves and having discussions well before everyone's back is against the wall. i can't believe i'm saying it but i am encouraged to see joe bide nen there and talking with mitch mcconnell. it is good to have the negotiations. they need to in her reference it's better to have them as fred as tear and ginger rogers dancing and discussing issues back and forth as opposed to what we have with thelma and lo

then there was congresswoman mccarthy, carol mccarthy from new york, who said yesterday, quote, the gloves are off if president obama fails to act on the issue. is the white house saying anything at all about some of the backlash that it's starting to get? >> reporter: well, not so far. at this point, i think jay carney made the point he did not feel comfortable talking about policy this soon after the shooting. but this would undoubtedly be a big issue for this white house in the coming days and weeks. they will undoubtedly get a number of questions about this. and craig, i can tell you, yesterday evening, there was a vigil that formed outside of the white house. and a lot of the people who attended that vigil called for stiffer gun legislation. other people went online, hundreds of them, calling for stiffer gun legislation. so i think we will see a renewed effort on that front. the brady campaign, by the way, gave this administration an "f" for its handling of this issue, back in 2010. so there will be pressure on this president to actually take action, to follow through with his words,
